Banks are always substantial

On my continuing quest to visit most of the small, historic towns in Maryland, I drove today to Manchester, Maryland, in Carroll County.

Main Street is lined with brick and stone homes, closely hugging the road, as is typical for a lot of Maryland small towns.  However, there does not seem to be a commercial "downtown," with storefronts and cafes. 

Patriotism Abounds

Businesses that are in town are primarily operated out of renovated homes:  a gardening center, a cafe (closed for the holiday), a liquor store, some barber shops, and a tattoo parlor.  One fairly new commericial building in town housed an Asian restaurant, where I had one of the best Pad Thai entrees I have ever eaten.

The Ivy Corps

Manchester saw action during the Civil War, due to its proximity to Gettysburg.  The Union Sixth Army Corps camped there on July 1, 1863, before marching the next day to battle.

The Lutheran Oak

I walked all along Main Street, from end to end, and then walked toward a couple of churches where there was a graveyard.  In the graveyard, I stood in awe of a huge oak tree, which towered over the edge of the cemetery.  According to Wikipedia, "The 'Lutheran White Oak,' as it has come to be known, is estimated at 320 years old. The large oak became a fixture of the town when, in 1758, King George III granted a charter to German colonists to erect a church near the tree."  There was a plaque under the tree, explaining that it has been growing since before the Revolution.  There is a time capsule under the plaque to be opened July 4, 2075.

I had a nice afternoon in Manchester.  One more Maryland town is now crossed off my "need to visit" list.
