Day 214 - Unitarian Universalist on Elmer Derr Road

Church on the Hill

There is a big church with glass windows at the top of a hill that I often admire when heading north on Rt. 15 after visiting places like Point of Rocks.  It is the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, and I have been inside the church before.  It has great views from its soaring glass windows.  Inside there is an art gallery, the Blanche Ames, where I will be having a photography show in December.  This weekend, the Frederick Plein Air Artists will be setting up their show for the month of April.

I parked in the church parking lot on Elmer Derr Road and walked the perimeter of its large property.  There were quite a few birds:  robins, juncos, sparrows, and bluebirds.  At least 8 nesting boxes are on the north side of the site.

Rt. 15 traffic streams behind the church, and to the south side there is a farm with lots of sheep.  There were a number of little lambs -- some clearly newborn, and others frolicking in that way that only little lambs can do.  They were so cute!  There were white, brown, and black lambs.  All were just darling.

I walked farther along Elmer Derr Road, admiring the view across the road with farms in the valley.  I should mention that when walking along country roads that have no shoulders, and hills and curves that make it difficult to see and hear traffic approaching, be sure to stay on the opposite side of the road from where traffic will appear.  If you can't see traffic approaching, they certainly cannot see you!

If you want to take a trip to see some great art and to admire the little lambs, there is a reception for the plein air show from 12:30 - 2:00 on Sunday afternoon.  Be sure to bring a camera!
