Day 276 - The Thurmont Trolley Trail

My friend Erin, who lives in Thurmont, clued me in to the Thurmont Trolley Trail, and that is where my friend Norma and I went for our walk today.

This information about the trolley trail comes from the Lions Club web site.  "From 1908 to 1954, Thurmont was the 'end of the line' for the trolley system that traveled from Frederick to Thurmont.  During its heyday in the 1920's, the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway (H &F) carried 3.8 million people per year.  However, with great strides in the world of transportation, the demands for the trolley dwindled and the H&F made its final trip to Thurmont in 1954; the tracks were removed and the once busy trail fell into disrepair."  To celebrate the Lions Club's 75th anniversary, they took on the project of revitalizing the trail for the purpose of creating a place for the people of Thurmont to enjoy.  More information is on the link above.

We found parking in the municipal lot, then walked along E. Main Street to find the beginning of the trail, directly across the street from the green trolley car.  The trail is about five feet wide, covered in pea gravel.  It is lined on both sides by utility poles and power lines, which probably once held the power lines for the electric trolleys.

Along the trail there are benches for sitting, picnic tables, and various planting beds for flowers.  There are a couple of bridges that cross creeks and streams.  It is well maintained, clean, and attractive.

Norma and I walked about a mile along the trail, photographing flowers along the way; then we made the return trip to town.  When we returned to the park and the band shell, members of the Lions Club were talking to a youth group about the restoration of the trail. 

Timeless Trends

We continued our walk in town, stopping in at Timeless Trends, where we spoke with Virginia.  We swapped stories about local history, then got recommendations from her about where to get ice cream.
