Day 282 - Neighborhoods in Frederick

There was only one bloom
in this long line of daylilies

There are some beautiful streets with early 1900's homes bordering downtown Frederick, notably Rockwell Terrace and Dill Avenue.  Both of them are west of Bentz Street, and they run for a few blocks before intersecting with College Avenue.  College Avenue, appropriately, runs past Hood College.

The homes along these streets are primarily brick, colonial style, many with front porches and large lawns.  They do not have attached garages, but there are garages in the alleyways that run behind the homes.  Today I walked along Rockwell, Dill, and McClellan (the "alley"), enjoying the tree shaded streets and the variety of flowering plants in the yards; hydrangeas and daylilies are just coming into full bloom.

Hydrangeas
It''s funny how rabbits think you won't
 see them if they freeze.
Along the alleyways there were glimpses into backyards with patios, raised bed gardens, terraces, sitting areas, and entertaining spaces.  They are like little hidden oases in the city.

I can just imagine the days when large families lived in these houses, with their Model T's parked along the streets.  The milkman would have made his rounds in the early morning, and on Sundays, families dressed in their best would have walked to the churches in town.

I had to look twice at this!

The citizens of Frederick have been enjoying these neighborhoods for more than a hundred years.  I hope they will continue to do so for at least another hundred more.
