Costumed Visitor
The original manuscript of "The Star Spangled Banner" has been on display in Frederick for a few days, and today it made the trip from City Hall, escorted by Frederick police officers, the Old Guard, mounted Maryland State Police, a fife and drum corps, and the Independent Hose Company fire wagon, along downtown streets to the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where Francis Scott Key is buried.

It was a great day for a parade, and I was asked by the Frederick Visitor Center to photograph the procession as it came up Market Street, so I decided to make my walk be along Market, to the cemetery and then around the cemetery.  My friend Norma accompanied me.

Various groups in period costume gathered at the fence along Market Street by the Maryland School for the Deaf.  Representatives from the American Legion, the DAR, and the Maryland State Police were in position by the old iron fencing.

After the procession went by, we followed it into the cemetery and stood listening to the ceremony, which included the raising of a replica of the 1813 flag that flew over Ft. McHenry, the singing of all four stanzas of the national anthem, and speeches by various dignitaries.

Norma and I walked more around the cemetery, finding the many graves of Confederate soldiers who are buried along the fence line.

It was a great day for a parade and all the pomp and circumstance that accompanied this momentous occasion.

I hope Francis Scott Key enjoyed all the attention he got today.
